Struggling with Infertility

Struggling with Infertility

Infertility is the diagnosis given when you are unable to get pregnant after a certain amount of time, usually six months to one year. There are many treatments that can increase your chance of becoming pregnant if you struggle with infertility. These include fertility drugs, hormone treatments, surgery and assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). While there is a success for some, many women who struggle with infertility may have to make peace with living without a biologic child of their own. Even then there are options, such as working with a surrogate and egg donor or adopting a child.

If you feel like you are the only one struggling with infertility, you aren’t. Infertility is common, with approximately 1 in 8 getting diagnosed with infertility. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are more than 200,000 cases of infertility each year. This isn’t a topic most people want to talk about, and it’s normal to be sad and grieve. It can be very draining and emotional for couples who struggle with infertility; however, working through the pain together is important to heal. There is no right or wrong way to cope with infertility. Just know that grief is an essential part of processing what you are feeling and what your body is going through, and it also gives you time to start feeling at peace with your diagnosis. It takes time and patience to move forward and there is no rush. There are also infertility support groups and grief counselors who can provide guidance and encouragement to help you cope and pursue different options for building a family, if and when you are ready.
